Reading develops in predictable stages. This grade-by-grade guide shows what to expect, what to watch for, and which Reading Mastery Pack supports each stage.

Kindergarten — sounds and sight words
K readers learn letter–sound mapping, recognize 50+ sight words, and decode CVC words like cat, sun, and bug.
Grades 1–2 — fluency and decoding
By end of Grade 2, students read short chapter books with expression, recognize common digraphs and blends, and answer literal comprehension questions.
Grades 3–5 — comprehension and inference
Reading shifts from learning to read into reading to learn. Vocabulary expands rapidly, students summarize multi-paragraph passages, and inference becomes the central comprehension skill.
Grades 6–8 — analysis and argument
Middle school readers analyze theme, evaluate author's argument, compare texts, and use evidence to support claims in writing.
