Learning milestones by grade (K–5)

Every child develops differently, but elementary grade levels share predictable academic milestones. Use this as a guide, not a checklist.

Kindergarten

Recognizes all letters and most sounds. Counts to 100. Writes their name. Reads simple CVC words.

1st grade

Reads short books fluently. Adds and subtracts within 20. Writes complete sentences.

2nd grade

Reads chapter books. Adds and subtracts within 100. Writes a short paragraph with a topic sentence.

3rd grade

Knows multiplication tables 1–10. Reads to learn (not just learns to read). Writes multi-paragraph stories.

4th grade

Multi-digit multiplication and division. Reads complex fiction and nonfiction. Introductory fractions.

5th grade

Operations with fractions and decimals. Inferential reading. Multi-paragraph essays with revision.
