Elementary learning skills checklist (K–5)
Use this checklist to identify gaps, celebrate progress, and decide what to practice next. Each grade lists the core skills students typically master by year's end — not a ceiling, just a useful map.

Kindergarten
Recognizes all letters and most sounds. Counts to 100. Writes their name. Reads CVC words. Holds a pencil with a functional grip.
Grade 1
Reads short books fluently. Adds and subtracts within 20. Writes complete sentences. Tells time to the half hour.
Grade 2
Reads chapter books. Adds and subtracts within 100. Writes a paragraph with a topic sentence. Skip-counts by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Grade 3
Knows multiplication tables 1–10. Reads to learn. Writes multi-paragraph stories. Understands fractions as parts of a whole.
Grade 4
Multi-digit multiplication and long division. Reads complex fiction and nonfiction. Writes structured essays. Compares fractions.
Grade 5
Operations with fractions and decimals. Inferential reading. Multi-paragraph essays with revision. Understands volume and coordinate planes.
